Katakana (片仮名) characters are based on Japanese syllables. These characters are used in comprising Kanji.
Kanji (漢字) is a vast group of logographs used in the written Japanese language.

Kyushu

Here are a few photographs I found of Kyushu. -It is the largest, southern-most island where the city of Fukuoka is located. It is obvious why they call it the "Hawaii of Japan".
